BERLIN (AP) — Germany is considering a
request from Turkey to prosecute a TV comedian who wrote a crude poem
about the Turkish president, Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman said
Monday. The request poses an awkward choice for the German leader as she relies on Turkey to reduce the influx of migrants to Europe. Turkey
sent a diplomatic note making "a formal request for criminal
prosecution" of comedian Jan Boehmermann, Merkel spokesman Steffen
Seibert said.

Boehmermann read the poem on ZDF
television two weeks ago to illustrate what he said wouldn't be allowed
in Germany, contrasting it with another channel's satirical song that
also poked fun at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Germany's
ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry in Ankara last month to
hear a protest over that song. Mainz
prosecutors told the dpa news agency late Monday that Erdogan had also
filed his own complaint accusing Boehmermann of slander, adding that it
would be considered as part of the ongoing investigation. While
the German government defended the song as legitimate free speech, it
has strongly distanced itself from the poem. Seibert has said that
Merkel and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu agreed the poem was
"deliberately offensive." Germany's
criminal code provides for up to three years in prison or a fine for
insulting a foreign head of state. However, it stipulates that such
offenses are only prosecuted if the country in question seeks
prosecution and the German government allows it. Seibert
told reporters Monday that officials would take several days to decide
whether to allow prosecutors to proceed in the case, but stressed that
Merkel holds free speech in high regard. It is "negotiable neither at
home nor abroad," he said. German
officials have appeared at pains to avoid causing further friction with
Erdogan, steering clear of direct criticism of the president in recent
weeks amid Turkey's sharp response to German satire. Merkel championed
the European Union-Turkey deal for Ankara to take back migrants who
travel illegally to Greece. Seibert
said he was stressing Merkel's dedication to free speech "to counter
the impression that the freedom of opinion and art ... no longer has the
necessary high value for the chancellor just because she, along with
other Europeans, wants to resolve the refugee question in partnership
with Turkey." In Turkey,
Erdogan spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said that "this kind of attack,
including insults and rude statements to a country's president and also
targeting a society, has nothing to do with freedom of expression or
with press freedom." "It is
an insult everywhere in the world, and it is a crime," he said, adding
that "those who publish this kind of ugliness ... apparently are annoyed
with improved relations" between Germany and Turkey. A senior German opposition lawmaker called on Merkel to reject the Turkish call for Boehmermann's prosecution. Left
Party parliamentary caucus leader Sahra Wagenknecht noted that in
Turkey, more than 1,800 cases have been opened against people accused of
insulting Erdogan since he came to office. "If Merkel caves in in the Boehmermann case, he will be able to strike at will in Germany as well in the future," she said. ___ Frank Jordans in Berlin and Dominique Soguel in Istanbul contributed to this report.

Bayern take a 1-0 lead to Portugal after Arturo Vidal's
early goal in the first leg, as Guardiola's men go gunning for their
five consecutive semi-final
Full-time: Bayern Munich progress 3-2 on aggregate
Bayern Munich are into the semi-finals of the Champions League. Tonight’s 2-2 draw in Lisbon was more than enough for Pep Guardiola’s men. They will face either Manchester City, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid next.

Substitute Robert Lewandowski is set free through the middle but puts his effort straight at the goalkeeper.

85' - Talisca goes close again
Talisca almost curls in another free-kick as he has Manuel Neuer clambering towards his near post.
Fortunately for the Bayern stopper, the effort goes just wide.

76' GOAL! Benfica 2-2 Bayern (Agg 2-3)
Talisca curls a rasping free-kick past Manuel Neuer and into the corner of the German’s net.
Benfica
need two goals in the last 14 minutes to make it through - and they’ll
feel as if they should be attempting to achieve that feat against 10
men.

74' - Martinez cautioned
Javi Martinez brings down Raul Jimenez as the Benfica striker bears down on goal but is only given a yellow card.
Benfica’s players begged the ref to brandish a red.

71' - Vidal almost gets his second
Arturo Vidal comes close to getting his second of the night in very bizarre circumstances.
The
midfielder runs onto a Thomas Muller pass but sends a tame effort
straight at Benfica’s goalkeeper, who somehow contrives to fumble the
ball narrowly past the post and out for a corner when he should’ve
gathered it with ease.
Pizzi and Philipp Lahm battle for possession

68' - Bayern goal disallowed
Thomas Muller thinks he’s got his second goal of the night but the offside flag is up.
Franck
Ribery finds David Alaba with a neat pass and the Austrian fires the
ball across the face of goal for Muller to tap into the empty net.
The flag was raised for Ribery’s pass to Alaba though, and replays show it was the correct decision.

60' - Costa hits the post
A marauding run into Benfica’s half sees Douglas Costa open up a shooting opportunity for himself on his favoured left foot.
The Bayern winger lets rip and sees his effort go beyond the keeper but cannon off the post.

55' - Ribery blazes over
Pep Guardiola berates Franck Ribery as the Frenchman blazes over from distance.
Clearly the former Barcelona boss had something else in mind.

51' GOAL! Benfica 1-2 Bayern (Agg: 1-3)
Game over.
Thomas Muller turns the ball home from a Javi Martinez header to make it 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.
That was too easy for the German champions and Muller’s strike is surely enough to seal their place in Friday’s last four draw.

All square at the break
The whistle has gone at the Estadio da Luz and it’s been a good half for Bayern.
Pep
Guardiola’s side have had the better of it and, despite going behind,
bounced back to score the away goal their play deserved.
Benfica have an uphill task to make the semis from here.

Elsewhere in Europe...
As it stands, Barcelona are heading out.
The defending champions are losing 1-0 at Atletico Madrid after Antoine Griezmann’s strike for the hosts.
Last week’s 2-1 result at the Nou Camp means Diego Simeone’s side stand to go through on away goals.

38' GOAL! Benfica 1-1 Bayern (Agg 1-2)
Arturo Vidal restores Bayern’s advantage with a vital away goal for the Bavarians.
The Chilean drills home from just outside the box with a sweetly struck left-footed effort.
Benfica now need to score twice to stand a chance of progressing into the last four.

27' GOAL! Benfica 1-0 Bayern (Agg: 1-1)
The tie is all square as Raul Jimenez meets a cross from the left-wing.
Manuel Neuer was caught in no man’s land there.

22' - Vidal denied
Arturo Vidal breaks into the box from midfield but directs his header
from a Thiago Alcantara pass straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.
Liam Corless
19' - Muller goes close
Phillip Lahm marauds down the right wing before putting in a cross to centre-forward Thomas Muller.
The German striker doesn’t connect with the ball cleanly but it almost spins into the bottom corner.
Pep Guardiola gives instructions from the touchline
Liam Corless
14' - Bayern dominating possession
Unsurprsingly, Pep Guardiola’s side are enjoying the lion’s share of possession against Benfica.
An early away goal will go some way to ending the tie, as that will leave the hosts needing to score three times.
Neither side have come close to breaking the deadlock as of yet though.

7' - Slow start in Lisbon
We’ve had five minutes of action in Lisbon and not much is happening.

Our teams are in...
We have our team news for tonight’s clash in Portugal.
Here’s how they’ll be lining up:
Can Benfica stop an inevitable-looking clash between Pep Guardiola’s
current and next teams, but overturn their first-leg deficit at the
Estadio da Luz?
Arturo Vidal’s early goal was enough to give
Bayern the lead at the half-way stage, as Benfica look to topple their
German opponents for the first-ever time in Europe.
A win for
Guardiola’s side will see them reach their fifth consecutive Champions
League semi-final, while the Portuguese side have not troubled the last
four of Europe’s biggest competition since 1990.
If they are to
do that, they will have to make do without 32-goal striker striker
Jonas, who is suspended. Midfielder Nicolas Gaitan is also a doubt with a
muscular problem.
Kinglsey Coman should return for Bayern after missing this weekend’s win at Stuttgart, but should be available after a knock.
Arjen Robben and Jermone Boateng are both missing for Bayern
We’ll bring you all the action from Portugal as it happens, so stay tuned...
